Heathy Lea - Our Peak District Hut
Walking and climbing in the Peak District has always been at the heart of Oread Club activities. Our mountaineering hut in Derbyshire – Heathy Lea - is our base for these activities, but it is also available for hire by other BMC affiliated Clubs.
Heathy Lea is on the Chatsworth Estate just outside Baslow, making it well placed for rock climbing or mountain biking. The Derbyshire gritstone edges of Birchen, Gardoms, Froggatt, Stanage and Millstone etc. are all close by. Chatsworth Edge is in the back garden!
It is also of course well placed for walking in the Peak District. The Robin Hood and Wheatsheaf pubs, plus the cafés and restaurants of Baslow are all within easy walking distance.
Heathy Lea consists of a cottage and a barn. You could hire just the Cottage, or the Cottage and Barn together. The Cottage sleeps a total of 12 people, 6 in each of two bedrooms, both having three sets of bunk beds. In addition the Barn sleeps a further 8 people.
Both bedrooms are heated by electric storage heaters. The lounge is heated by an electric storage heater and a multi-fuel stove. Coal is provided for use when required.
In the lounge there is also a small climbing book library, and a money box for hut day fees. The kitchen is well equipped, with a four ring ceramic hob, 2 ovens , one with a grill, a toaster, electric kettle and microwave plus all the necessary cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery.
There is a small washroom with H&C sink and shower, a timed fan heater, and, newly installed for summer 2019, a much appreciated indoor loo.
The porch contains a fridge, shelving for food, and provides hanging space for wet gear. An additional toilet is located adjacent to the porch, in a separate building. The toilet light switch is in the porch, and the key is hanging up there too.
The barn is intended as an overflow to the cottage, and therefore only offers basic facilities. A staircase leads to a loft area that sleeps eight people. Mattresses are provided.
There is adequate parking space right next to the hut and an area outside the Barn, suitable for bonfires and barbecues.
All bookings should be made through the Hut Booking secretary.
