Geo Walk Milldale – Wetton Mill

Sunday 15 Dec. 2024

(Please note change of date!)
This being a one way walk I shall present myself with a vehicle at the car park
adjacent to Wetton Mill Tea Room at 10.00 am, in the hope that others will leave
a vehicle there and travel back to Milldale with me (the walk will then commence
at 10 30am). By then even Squires, if he joins us, and most certainly the rest of
humanity will be well adjusted to GMT.
We shall first take the footpath to the top of Cave Dale and then cross the road at
Stanhope Grange, and thence to Wetton, the Manor house and Wetton Mill. It is
rumoured that a stallion, once kept at Stanhope Grange, escaped onto the public
highway and mounted a pony pulling a milk cart with considerable damage to the
shafts and harness. Those travelling with me are likely to be well past the peak of
virility and unlikely to attempt a similar escapade. The area is typical of limestone
geological features and any discourse from me will be minimal.
To recap, walk starts at Milldale at 10.30, park where possible and meet on foot
by the packhorse bridge.
Those willing to leave a vehicle at Wetton Mill, please park there at 10 am, on the
East side of the road, just North of the turning into the Mill premises (map ref SK
094 561).
It would be helpful if those planning to attend would let me know a day or two
beforehand so than transport arrangements can be firmed up.
