Oread 75th Anniversary

2024 is the 75th Anniversary of the formation of the Oread Mountaineering Club.   During 2024 we are holding celebratory events to mark the occasion:

75th Anniversary Camping Meet: 13th -15th September 2024

A very successful event was held with over 100 members and friends of the club attending.

75th Anniversary Dinner: Saturday 23rd November 2024.

The Annual Dinner celebrating our 75th Anniversary will take place at the Maynard Arms, Grindleford on 23rd November 2024.

Past newsletter articles

The anniversary gives us the opportunity (excuse) to look back over the last 25 years. To  provide a ‘countdown’  we are going to reproduce a noteworthy article from the Newsletter archive every month from now until the end of 2024.  The articles have been selected to reflect what has happened within the club rather than the best articles but hopefully they are all rather good.  They should allow us to have a little indulgent wallow in nostalgia!  We hope you enjoy (re)reading the articles: 75th Articles

Photographic Archive

A second initiative is to get a club photographic archive on the website. Contributions so far, and details of how to offer photographs for the archive can be seen here: 75th Photo Album

Oread Mountaineering Club 75th Anniversary Journal

The earlier days of the club have been celebrated in 2 books:

Climb if you Will, a commentary on Geoff Hayes and his contribution to the club, and covering the first 25 years of the club.

Oread 50th Anniversary Journal covering the first 50 years of the club.

To bring things up to date we have produced for the 75th Anniversary a journal. This contains articles predominantly covering the most recent 25 years of the club’s history and personal reflections of that period, along with records of particular meets, dinners, past presidents, hut wardens and contributions from some of them on their time in office. It has been published just before the 75th Anniversary Dinner in November 2024.

This is a pdf document but printed copies will be made available on demand.

The Journal is on the Books page of the website along with 6 appendices with are longer versions of articles which have been abridged for the main journal.
